Who Is Inventor of Telephone? Sure of him Is not Graham of Bell!
Selama ini tokoh yang dikenal sebagai penemu telepon adalah Alexander Graham Bell. Namun, sebuah buku berjudul "The Telephone Gambit: Chasing Alexander Graham Bell's Secret" karya Seth Shulman telah menjungkirbalikkan hal tersebut. Buku itu menyebut Bell telah mencuri ide Elisha Gray, sesama penemu berkebangsaan Amerika.
Buku tersebut mengungkit sebuah jurnal atau catatan penelitian Bell yang selama ini selalu berusaha disembunyikan dari publik oleh keluarga Bell hingga 1976, yang akhirnya dapat tersebar luas lantaran bantuan teknologi digital.
Jurnal tersebut memaparkan secara rinci usaha Bell dan Thomas Watson, asistennya, untuk mentransmisi suara lewat kabel secara elektromagnetik pada 1876. Setelah percobaannya gagal, Bell pergi ke kantor hak paten di Washington untuk menanyakan secara detail hak paten milik Gray.
Tak berselang lama, Bell menemukan jenis transmiter lain (prototip dari telepon)yang diyakini mirip dengan ide Gray, termasuk bagan kasar orang yang sedang berbicara di telepon.
Kecurigaan lainnya muncul tatkala di persidangan tahun 1878 untuk mengungkap penemu telepon sejati, Bell kebingungan memberikan pernyataan dan gugup ketika diminta mendemonstrasikan perangkat telepon di hadapan Elisha Gray, demikian seperti dikutip detikINET dari Softpedia, Sabtu (29/12/2007).

Kongres Amerika Serikat telah mengeluarkan resolusi untuk meredakan kontroversi ini dengan menyatakan bahwa penemu telepon sebenarnya adalah Antonio Meucci, warga Italia, bukan Philipp Reis, Bell ataupun Gray.
